Day 9: Perspective
I’m a little overwhelmed at the shop today, so a short note to keep building the habit of a daily update.
Taking a few orders today reminded me of something I wanted to do and have not prioritized. We describe what we see differently. So when a technician is on a job site and needs to call in a custom ductwork part, it’s part of my job to understand their perspective. I have to ask the right questions to be sure I have the information needed to build the custom part correctly. Sometimes those details come from a drawing or a video. And, sometimes, the only option is over the phone. It can be a challenge for both parties, but it’s easy if I know the person’s perspective. If that’s not coming across well, I'll create a visual to help them understand what I am looking for.
It occurred to me today that I need to create a few basic standards and starting points that I can easily share with the people calling for parts and pieces. The caller is not always a technician. Oftentimes I’m dealing with a homeowner.
Anyway, I put on my list of tasks for building a standard to begin writing down and collecting photos so I can create a few tutorials where people can see what I might be talking about in my verbal examples. It will take some time, but it will be helpful.
